1.3 billion tons of food are lost or wasted every year globally

The global volume of food waste is projected to be 1.6 billion tonnes of "primary product equivalents," including 1.3 billion tonnes of edible food waste. Only a small fraction of total food waste is composted; the majority of it ends up in landfills and makes up a large portion of municipal solid waste. Landfill methane emissions are one of the most significant sources of GHG emissions from the waste sector.
